Nitrous Oxide Dentistry
Nitrous Oxide dentistry uses Nitrous Oxide Gas, often referred to as laughing gas, sweet air, inhalation sedation, relative analgesia, RA, and happy gas. Nitrous, N2O-O2, is an effective anesthetic drug that has many benefits for patients who have dental anxiety or fear but need dental treatments. Nitrous oxide gas has no color or odor and is breathed in.
It was first discovered by Joseph Priestley in 1774 by Joseph Priestley. In 1800 an English chemist named Humphrey Davy experimented with it on animals and himself. In 1844 a dentist named Dr. Horace Wells saw a demonstration at a carnival. He had a colleague extract his infected tooth after he was under the influence of nitrous oxide; he liked the results so much that he began using it on his patients. It is currently used in approximately 1/3 of U.S. dentist offices.
The gas is administered through a mask that is placed over the nose, the patient is directed to breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth. It works quickly and reaches the brain within 20 seconds, relaxation and pain-killing properties develop after 2 or 3 minutes. Once the gas has been adjusted to the appropriate dose and the patient is relaxed, the dentist can then give any needed injection, and then proceed with dental treatment. After the dental procedure is completed, the dentist gives you pure oxygen for about five minutes to reverse the effects of the nitrous oxide.
Dentists find nitrous oxide especially useful for fearful patients as well as young children. The effect of nitrous oxide is often remarkable. A patient that was anxious just a minute or two before treatment will become relaxed and calm. Because nitrous oxide is so effective, dentists rarely need to prescribe Valium for anxious patients before treatment. If you are nervous before or during dental treatment, ask your dentist if he or she has nitrous oxide available -- it works wonders!
Nitrous Oxide Dentistry provides a safe and effective option for patients undergoing dental procedures who are unenthusiastic about going to the dentist for general wellness or to fix their smile because they are afraid or anxious about dental procedures. Nitrous Oxide Dentistry can make you feel comfortable during the treatment process and help you achieve a smile you can be proud of.
