Conscious Sedation Dentistry

Conscious Sedation is an altered state of consciousness that minimizes pain and discomfort. It is a way to reduce anxiety during dental procedures by use of drugs or sedatives. The patient retains a minimum level of consciousness while continuing to breathe on his or her own, respond to verbal and physical prompts, and communicate any discomfort they may be having.

Conscious sedation is a safe and effective method when administered by qualified providers, such as Dr. Drake. Because patients can slip into a deep sleep, proper monitoring of conscious sedation is necessary. Dr. Drake will monitor the heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, oxygen level and alertness throughout and after the procedure. The provider who monitors the patient receiving conscious sedation should have no other responsibilities during the procedure and should remain with the patient at all times during the procedure.

Some side effects of conscious sedation can include: a brief period of amnesia after the procedure, occasional (but rare) side effects may include headache, hangover feeling, nausea and vomiting. Your dentist and or staff will monitor you immediately following the procedure and you will be given written postoperative care instructions to take home. You should not drive a vehicle, operate dangerous equipment or make any important decisions for at least 24 hours after receiving conscious sedation. A follow-up phone call usually is made by the dentist to check your condition and answer any remaining questions.

Conscious sedation provides a safe and effective option for patients undergoing dental procedures and allows you to recover quickly and resume normal activities in 24 hours. If you are unenthusiastic about going to the dentist for general wellness or to fix your smile because you are afraid or anxious about dental procedures, conscious sedation can make you feel comfortable during the treatment process and help you achieve a smile you can be proud of.

Our dentists and staff here at Atlantic Dentists select the best type of sedation method for you. They will provide proper dental care you need for good health and wellness. Please call us at 386-673-1611 to set up your dental check up.
